Overview
A hybrid forestation and carbon-credit forest model that restores degraded hill forests — propagating local species for carbon sequestration while stabilising slopes against landslides and erosion.
AERF is HEAL's applied restoration model for degraded hill landscapes, combining hybrid forestation techniques with carbon-credit forestry. Reforested degraded hill forest is estimated to sequester on the order of 190 tonnes of carbon per hectare.
The model pairs ecological restoration with resilience engineering — bio-engineering techniques such as vetiver and contour planting stabilise slopes against landslides and soil erosion, protecting both ecosystems and livelihoods.
It underpins biodiversity business incubation and community seed banks that preserve local, climate-resilient crop varieties, and provides a continuous data source for HEAL's research programmes.
